Jul 12, 2002 Abstract Hortonian runoff was measured in the laboratory from uniform slopes of lengths of 1·5, 3·0, and 6·0 m for steady, high‐intensity
Related investigations suggested that energetic extremal principles might constrain hydrological processes, because the latter are associated with conversions and dissipation of free energy. Here we expand this thermodynamic perspective by exploring how macro and micro hillslope structures control the free energy balance of Hortonian overland flow.
In fact there is a continuum of soil and climate conditions: from those with zero infiltration capacity, on which alI runoff is as Hortonian overland flow; via slopes with moderate infiltration capacities on which overland flow will occur with a 2018-04-03 · Ziegler, Alan D Tran T. Liem Tran Duc Vien We use a hydrology-based fragmentation index to explore the influence of land-cover distribution on the generation and buffering of Hortonian overland flow (HOF) in two disturbed upland basins in northern Vietnam (Tan Minh). To examine factors affecting Hortonian overland flow generation in forested hillslopes, we measured overland flow at plots in Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), Japanese ceder (Cryptomeria japonica), and broadleaf forests of three study sites (Kochi, Mie, and Tokyo), which had different geology and climate. On the basis of field observations during storms, at least a portion of the monitored 'Hortonian overland flow' was actually occurring in this near-surface 'biomat'. Therefore our field measurements in both small and large plots potentially included biomat flow in addition to short-lived Hortonian runoff. 2016-12-29 · Saturation overland flow 6.

2021-04-08 2016-12-29 Because overland flow decreased with increasing scale, rill erosion did not occur on hillslopes. Additionally, runoff coefficients were not significantly different among cover conditions during large storms; thus, the 'degraded' forest conditions appear not to greatly enhance peak flows or erosion potential at larger scales, especially when biomat flow is significant. Overland flow occurred at all plots.
Oct 7, 2015 The runoff is generated through a fast mechanism in which the water moves as a thin sheet above the soil surface (Hortonian overland flow).

Here we expand this thermodynamic perspective by exploring how macro and micro hillslope structures control the free energy balance of Hortonian overland flow. Overland flow or surface run off on a saturated hill side. Hortonian overland flow High rain rates and low infiltration rates lead to rapid infiltration excess saturation and marked patterns of runon and runoff across the hillslope. Done
2009-09-01 · Infiltration excess overland (Hortonian) flow was generated by 15 min of artificial precipitation at a rate of 4.2 mm min-1 which was roughly 2–3 times the saturated soil conductivity. To prevent algal growth in the soil a light oil instead of water was used. After rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil, the Hortonian overland flow hydrographs can be divided into a rainfall excess phase and a recession-infiltration phase. The rainfall excess phase
2007-04-15 · One consequence of reduced infiltrability is an increase in Hortonian overland flow (HOF, caused when rainfall rate exceeds infiltrability and surface storage; Horton, 1933).

It is now widely recognized that surface saturation can occur because of two quite distinct mechanisms—specifically, Horton overland flow
Horton-flow: När nederbörd > infiltration. Ex: if soil surface can infiltrate 30mm/hr & precipitation 40mm/hr, then the overland flow will be 10mm.

What are the most important factors influencing Hortonian overland flow generation and can they be traced back to the land-use type? 3. Does this lead to soil erosion processes and under which conditions?
